We spoke to representatives of our five Challenger League participants from Denmark, France, Norway, Poland and the United Kingdom following the CHL Draw in Prague, Czechia, to find out what their goals were for the upcoming season, what they thought about their six Regular Season opponents and who they were most looking forward to playing.
"We're a small team so it's great to share experience with the big teams"Guy Fournier, Rouen Dragons
First to speak was Klaus Rasmussen of SønderjyskE Vojens who said that the Danish champions want to "learn on the biggest stage of European hockey."
Guy Fournier of the Rouen Dragons was up next, saying: "The CHL is always a great experience for us. We're a small team so it's great to share experience with the big teams."
Njål Berge of Storhamar Hamar said that his side's goal for the upcoming CHL season is to make the Playoffs: "We've always made the Playoffs so that would be our start and maybe even making the Quarter-Finals but coming from a Challenger League that will be really really hard."
Nik Zupancic of CHL newcomers Unia Oświęcim started by saying that the CHL is a "reward for a successful season" for his club. "Our goal is for our fans: we want to bring some top teams to Poland and offer our fans the opportunity to go on the road with us," he added.
Aaron Fox of the Sheffield Steelers said that this is set to be an "interesting campaign" for the EIHL champions. "We're really looking forward to it! It should be a good set of games for us and our fans," he added.
What did the Challenger League representatives think of their draw?
"We have opponents from Germany, Austria, Finland - all top teams!" was Rasmussen's take while Rouen's Guy Fournier reiterated that Rouen are in for the learning progress.
For Storhamar's Berge, there's already a clear favourite among his side's six Regular Season opponents: "We were so happy to get Färjestad Karlstad."
Zupancic was realistic when analysing the draw: "From a sports perspective, I think it's quite OK. We're still the underdogs against any team but we'll try to surprise everyone!"
"It's a difficult one," was Fox's takeaway, "there are no easy games and it's for sure going to be a difficult task for our group but it's something for us to work towards."
And finally, which clubs stood out most to the representatives?
"If I had to pick one special game, it's the one against our friends Pinguins Bremerhaven. They're a club we know well and we have connections together," responded Rasmussen.
For Fournier, it's too hard to pick one. "Our fans are glad to see any of the big teams coming to Rouen, we're just happy to be involved in the CHL," he commented.
For Storhamar it is of course the Färjestad game. "They're the Swedish club most of our fans support and everyone is already calling and wanting to go there," he said.
Zupancic approached this from a fan's and the team's point of view: "Třinec is really interesting. It's close to Poland and a lot of fans will travel," he said, "but also let's not forget Tappara and for me personally, I am looking forward to facing Salzburg and Klagenfurt because that's a league close to Slovenia and one I follow."
Aaron Fox had to have a think about his answer. "They are all such good teams with so much history, there really isn't a bad team among them," he concluded.
