Swedish side Frölunda Gothenburg are a team every Champions Hockey League fan knows very well. A club known for a passionate fan base, a rich tradition of developing elite talent, and an unmatched record in the Champions Hockey League. Frölunda's name is synonymous with excellence on an international level.
On Thursday, 4 September 2025, the four-time CHL Champions became the first team in the history of our pan-European competition to break the 100 games played barrier. Here's a look back at some memorable games of their nine seasons of elite club ice hockey.
Game #1 | First Game
It's 21 August 2014, and Frölunda are on the road in Switzerland, ready to face Genève-Servette for their first-ever Champions Hockey League game. Though they don't end up winning, a three-goal third period from the Swedes was a nice highlight of the game for them and the start of a strong season - one of many more to come.
Game #13 | First Final
The first-ever Champions Hockey League Final was played between Luleå Hockey and Frölunda Gothenburg in the Coop Norrbotten Arena on 3 February 2015. Frölunda scored two within the first 13 minutes, with the legendary Joel Lundqvist also on the scoresheet, but a huge four-goal comeback from Luleå in the final period saw Frölunda miss out on the European Trophy that year.
Game #26 | First Championship
One year on from a heartbreaking loss to Luleå in the 2015 CHL Final, Frölunda line up in Finland against Kärpät Oulu and this time they grind out a win to lift the European Trophy for the very first time.
Game #39 | Two-time CHL Champions
Third CHL season, third CHL Final, and 2016/17 was another special one for the Swedish powerhouse club, as, despite a very close contest from Sparta Prague that had to be decided in OT, they ended up claiming the European Club Champions title in back-to-back seasons.
Game #50 | Half a Century
The big 50th game milestone came on 6 September 2018, when Frölunda faced ZSC Lions Zurich at home. They won the game 4-2. Current team captain Max Friberg was on the line-up and scored the fourth goal of the game.
Game #60 | Lightning Strikes Again
Following a very tough and hard-fought season, the Swedes made their fourth CHL Final and as two-time winners, they had their eye firmly on the trophy. Up against them were Red Bull Munich, but they had to step aside come the final whistle as Frölunda won their third CHL title in five seasons on 5 February 2019.
Game #73 | Making History
Though Frölunda's name was firmly in the history books prior to the 2020 CHL Final in Czechia, winning the CHL for a fourth time really made them an immortal club and forever part of the Champions Hockey League.
Game #80 | Biggest Win
When Frölunda travelled to Germany to face Adler Mannheim in the 2021/22 Round of 16, nobody would have expected them to beat them 10-1. The Swedish club went on to score 10 goals in a game again when they faced Grenoble the following season, but let in two that time.
Game #97 | Two Legends bid Frölunda Farewell
Just like Frölunda are synonymous with the CHL, so are the names Ryan Lasch and Joel Lundqvist. Both were monumental in the Swedish team's past success on the pan-European stage. Lasch is a three-time CHL Champion and the league's all-time leader in goals, assists and points scored, while Lundqvist is one of the biggest legends of the Swedish club and with 30 goals and 39 assists in 88 games played, he's also a certified CHL legend with his name firmly in our history books. The pair played their final CHL game for Frölunda on 17 January 2023.
Game #100 | The Milestone
Frölunda played their milestone 100th game on 4 September 2025 on the road in Poland, where they faced GKS Tychy. The Swedes marked the night with a 3-1 win!
Frölunda are the iconic team of the Champions Hockey League and have now entered the next century of elite European club ice hockey games. Here's to many, many more!
