- Belfast out of Playoffs contention
- Brynäs need offence to complement their excellent defence
- Defensive awareness will be key for both clubs
A bad dream turned into a nightmare for the Belfast Giants as they dropped their fifth-straight game in a 7-0 lashing from SC Bern. Outmatched from the first puck drop, Belfast were unable to generate pressure as the Swiss dismantled their attempts, only allowing 17 shots on net.
Their next opponents experienced their own setback, albeit not to the same degree, as Brynäs IF were beaten 2-1 by Norwegian challengers Storhamar Hamar. Tyler Vesel eventually tied it at one in the third period, but Storhamar's Colin Campbell would lift them to victory.
Belfast have had a hard go of it this year as it seems like nothing is really clicking with the club. Their plus/minus stands at -18, they've allowed the most goals per game with 6.00, while the club's PK is tied for fourth-worst with 72.22% and their powerplay stats are equally low, converting at a mere 9.09%. Despite this, Belfast have a shot to bring home one win before they bow out. That win, however, will depend on how good their goaltending is, as their Swedish challengers have found it challenging to light the lamp themselves.
On the opposing bench, Brynäs have revealed some holes in their game, and aren't strangers to an underdog gaining the upper hand. With this in mind, it's best to get back to the basics - a structured defence and solid netminding. So far this season, the club has only allowed two or fewer goals against per game and sits tied for third place with fellow Swedish team Frölunda Gothenburg in goals against with 1.60.
Scoring has been their biggest issue this season and their powerplay is ranked the worst in the league, converting at only 4.55%, but gaining the lead and maintaining it could be the decisive move to claim their fourth victory.
