- Both clubs lost in their previous contests
- Despite the loss, Tychy should focus on replicating their defensive strategy
- Luleå need to improve their 5-on-5 play
Despite being outshot 34-15, GKS Tychy made Frölunda Gothenburg earn their third victory of the season as the Swedes would eventually come away with a 3-1 win. Luleå Hockey also experienced a loss in their last contest, falling 2-1 to Sparta Prague in the shootout.
Tychy's rough go of their fourth participation in the Champions Hockey League continued as they went up against one of the toughest competitors in Frölunda. A slick one-timer from Hannu Kuru looked set to spoil the Swedes' unbeaten streak as Tomáš Fučík played like a brick wall for 35 minutes of the match. But one tally was all it took to turn the tide and keep Frölunda's momentum going.
Going forward, the Poles have another chance to play spoiler against a Swedish team that hasn't been as successful this season. Through three games, Luleå haven't allowed as many goals against - only 2.33 GA - but they also haven't scored a bunch - only 2.33 GG. If Tychy's netminding could replicate their effort against Frölunda, the Polish side might have a chance to make amends in front of their home fans.
Luleå, meanwhile, have had chances to win, but just couldn't close it out. As they prepare to go up against Tychy, the Swedes should be focusing their efforts on their 5-on-5 play as their special teams numbers have been excellent. They currently sport 100% on the PK and their powerplay is tied for fifth place with Frölunda. Drawing penalties while dictating the pace of play at equal strength are Luleå's best hopes of re-entering the win column.
