Pinguins Bremerhaven did the incredible and forged a comeback against Lukko Rauma, defeating the Finns 3-2 in a shootout after evening things with less than a minute to go in regulation. Nicolas Krämmer netted the game-winner and Kristers Gudļevskis stopped 33 of 35 shots and 3 of 5 in the shootout to help lift the Germans to their second victory.
Gudļevskis was the busier of the two netminders through the opening 20 minutes, stopping eight of eight, while his counterpart Daniel Salonen denied all four shots he faced.
Lukko would eventually break through for the first goal of the game at 39:27 when a giveaway led to Eric Gélinas skating in with the puck and wristing it low. Gudļevskis made the initial pad save, but Gélinas stayed with the play to put it over the right pad and give the visitors the lead. The Finns padded their lead in the third when Jami Krannila cleaned up a rebound from the top of the crease.
Momentum shifted late in the third, however, as Bremerhaven, despite being heavily outplayed for most of the match, were able to battle back and even found themselves tied with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
Bennet Roßmy got his club on the board at 57:21, securing his second of the tournament. Moments later on the powerplay, the Germans opted for the extra skater, and it worked as Christian Wejse redirected the puck up and over Daniel Salonen to level things at 2-2.
With the score still knotted after Overtime, the shootout followed where Krämmer backhanded it bardown to lift his team over Lukko and gain that all-important extra point.
