- Zug's powerplay was on point
- Belfast's poor defence continues to haunt them
- Dominik Kubalík: 2G; 14:43 TOI
EV Zug cruised past the Belfast Giants with a 5-3 win that featured more of the same dominance we've seen from the Swiss this season as well as more of the same mistakes we've seen from their opponents.
Dominik Kubalík finished off a pretty passing play to net his third tally and fifth point, as Lino Martschini and Tomáš Tatar each recorded their second assists of the tournament.
Belfast's Patrick Grasso earned his fifth point assisting on Nicolas Guay's goal when Grasso fired a sharp-angled shot that bounced around in the crease before Guay found it and put it home less than 20 seconds later.
Zug would recapture the lead at 11:03 on the powerplay, when Kubalík took advantage of a mad scramble in front of Jackson Whistle to slide home his second of the game. Elia Riva then made it a 3-1 affair when he blasted one past a screened Whistle on the same man-advantage.
In the second, it was a fast transition up ice from the Swiss that helped manufacture their fourth marker, this time a one-timer from Grégory Hofmann who leaned into a pass from Sven Leuenberger to increase his club's edge.
Puck dropped in the final frame and 58 seconds later, Jake Gaudet was able to cut into the Swiss side's lead when he beat Tim Wolf over the blocker.
A lead pass and a breakaway for Zug brought the lead back to three tallies, however, when Sven Senteler converted for his club's fifth tally at 49:38.
Gabe Bast found the net five minutes later for the visitors, but that would be their last as any hopes of a win were dashed when Jan Kovář sealed the Swiss side's victory with an empty-netter.
