- Tychy stun Klagenfurt for first win of the season
- Klagenfurt's place in the Playoffs hanging in the balance after loss
- Mark Viitanen: 2G, 1A in 15:58 TOI
A four-goal third period gave GKS Tychy their first win of the 2025/26 Champions Hockey League season as they stunned KAC Klagenfurt in a 4-1 decision that now possibly puts the Austrians' chances of advancing to the Playoffs in jeopardy. Mark Viitanen scored twice while adding a helper and Tomáš Fučík made 35 saves on 36 shots en route to the victory.
Neither side's netminder seemed to be solvable past the halfway mark of the middle frame, though Fučík was certainly the busier of the two, stopping 24 of 24 shots while his counterpart in Florian Vorauer denied 12 of 12.
Klagenfurt finally found an answer to the Polish netminder when Nicholas Petersen let one fly, beating both Fučík and the buzzer with just six ticks left on the clock as the Austrians broke the deadlock. Thimo Nickl made the initial cross-ice pass as Petersen gathered the puck, dusted it off and hurled it into the cage for his third of the competition.
The Poles then made their breakthrough in the third when Matias Lehtonen directed the puck towards the net as Viitanen glided across the crease, collected it and put it past Vorauer at 49:07 for his first on the night. As the period wore on, momentum continued to shift in favour of the visitors when Tychy converted twice on a powerplay opportunity.
First, Valtteri Kakkonen gave the Polish side the lead when he rifled a nifty between-the-legs feed from Rasmus Heljanko, and then Viitanen registered his second marker 27 seconds later when his wrister squeaked through the pads of the Klagenfurt netminder.
The Austrians opted for the extra attacker immediately following the powerplay, but Fučík played his part to keep his club's lead in tact. Lehtonen sealed his club's first victory with an empty-netter as the Polish finally found themselves in the win column.
