- Antti Raanta secured his first shutout of the season
- Zug were unable to capitalise on special teams
- The Finns held the shot advantage at 28-21
A battle between two excellent netminders saw a single tally be the difference maker as Lukko Rauma skated away with a 1-0 victory over EV Zug. Antti Raanta secured his first shutout and helped his club to three more points as they continue to seek passage to the Round of 16. For his part, Leonardo Genoni was the victim of an ineffective offensive effort that was constantly thwarted by an excellent Lukko defence.
It seemed as though the Finns had taken the lead late in the first on the powerplay, but after review the play was deemed offsides as both clubs were held scoreless after 20 minutes.
A sneaky shot through traffic found its way past a surprised Genoni as Lukko would eventually take the lead at 25:27 of the contest. Defenceman Arttu Välilä played catch-and-release with Jami Krannila as Krannila dished Välilä the puck allowing the 18-year-old to sweep it far side and make it a 1-0 game.
The Finns' defence, highlighted by Raanta's flawless play, continued to frustrate Zug's offensive efforts as the Swiss were only able to muster 10 shots through two periods. Though he wasn't called on often, Raanta made a couple of key saves, including a snapshot from just above the hashmarks, to keep his team in front.
In the third, Zug continued to chase the lead and offered up several quality chances, but Raanta and co. were the immovable object against the Swiss side's unstoppable force. With a powerplay chance in hand in the dying minutes, and all-important points still up-for-grabs, Zug pulled Genoni in exchange for the extra attacker, but the hosts succeeded in denying their opponents' opportunities as Lukko took their third contest of the campaign.
