Nicholas Petersen’s powerplay goal in overtime was the difference in KAC Klagenfurt’s narrow 2-1 win over the visiting Bordeaux Boxers. It was an impressive Champions Hockey League debut for the French champions, who outshot Klagenfurt 38-17 in the game, and earned one point.

The Boxers scored their first-ever CHL goal just past the game’s 12-minute mark. It began with a stretch pass from the Bordeaux zone and finished with a 2-on-1 rush – Steven Fournier sending a nifty backhand pass to Quentin Tomasino, who was driving to the net for the tap-in.

Klagenfurt’s best chance of the opening period came late, when Maximilian Preiml’s golf shot from the point was deflected in front and hit the crossbar behind Quentin Papillon.

Loïc Farnier had a chance to double Bordeaux’s lead on a breakaway early in the second period but Florian Vorauer didn’t bite on the deke attempt and made the save. Then Klagenfurt went to the powerplay for the only time in regulation time and had some chances, but the score remained 1-0.

Klagenfurt finally hit the scoreboard with exactly seven minutes remaining in the middle frame. Putting on pressure in the Bordeaux zone,Petersen fed Thimo Nickl, whose shot from the high slot through traffic went off the post and in.

Each team had chances to pull ahead in the third period but Vorauer and Papillon stood tall. The Boxers got their only powerplay of the game with 7:42 to go and threatened in the Klagenfurt zone, but were unable to break through.

In overtime, Tomasino – who had opened the scoring – was called for interference. On just their second powerplay of the game, Klagenfurt capitalized 4-on-3. Stationed in front of the net Petersen got his stick on Jan Muršak’s point shot, and the puck slowly trickled across the goal line.
