Filip Sandberg scored in overtime to give Bílí Tygři Liberec a 3-2 win over visiting Frölunda Gothenburg, as both teams pick up key points in the race for Champions Hockey League Playoff spots.
After a slow start to the game, the action picked up midway through the first period, particularly by the visitors, who had several chances, but Petr Kváča was sharp in the Liberec net. But Frölunda scored the only goal of the opening period in the 14th minute when Filip Cederqvist did a good job of shielding the puck as he went around the Liberec net, then centred out front to Noah Hasa for the tap-in from in close.
Liberec pressured early in the second period on the powerplay, and just after it expired, Jakub Rychlovský had an open net to shoot at but was denied by a flying goal stick, thrown by Tobias Normann, which resulted in a penalty shot. On the shot, Radan Lenc beat Normann. low to the blocker side to tie the score.
Right off the opening faceoff in the third period, Liberec had a golden chance to take the lead after a giveaway sent Lenc in alone. Looking for his second of the game, Lenc once again tried to go blocker side, but this time was denied by Normann.
With 14:15 remaining, Liberec finally did take the lead. On a delayed penalty to Frölunda, defenceman Tomáš Galvas fired a shot from the high slot that beat Normann top corner.
Frölunda killed off the ensuing penalty and then tried to mount an attack. They tied it back up with 5:27 to go when Henrik Tömmernes took a pass from Samuel Johannesson and beat Kváča short side with a quick shot.
In overtime, Liberec scored on a delayed penalty for the second time in the game. After holding possession for a lengthy period of time in the Frölunda zone, Sandberg fired a shot that beat Norman over the shoulder for the game-winning goal.
